How to choose an orthopedic bed that will not flatten in six months

Start with support, not softness

A plush surface can feel luxurious while hiding weak foam underneath. For a heavy dog, look for a clearly specified solid foam core or layered support system. If a manufacturer does not disclose what is inside, treat that as a warning sign.

A supportive bed should let your dog settle without sinking to the floor. Press firmly through the center and edges; you should feel resistance before your hand reaches the base.

Measure the sleeping dog

Measure from nose to rump while your dog is fully stretched out, then add room for legs and position changes. Ignore broad size labels such as XL unless the actual sleeping-surface dimensions are listed.

• Prioritize usable inner dimensions over the outside footprint
• Choose a low or open entry for dogs with limited mobility
• Make sure bolsters do not steal essential sleeping space

Demand a washable system

A removable, machine-washable outer cover is the minimum. A waterproof inner liner protects the expensive foam from drool, accidents, and damp fur. Check whether replacement covers are sold separately before buying.

• Grippy base for smooth floors
• Strong zipper placement away from chewing edges
• Fabric that tolerates frequent washing

Know when to replace it

Rotate the bed regularly and inspect it during cover washes. Lasting dents, torn liners, strong odors, or a dog repeatedly choosing the floor can signal that the bed is no longer doing its job.

Persistent stiffness, difficulty rising, or pain deserves a veterinary assessment. A good bed supports a care plan; it does not replace one.
